Why Study The Bible?

Have we ever wondered "why" we should study the Bible, other than the fact that it is a command? (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV). The following are some additional reasons as to "why" we should study the Bible:

1) That we may live spiritually be being born anew by God's word (cf. Luke 8:11; 1 Peter 1:23). Unless one is born anew, he cannot enter the kingdom of heaven (John 3:1-5).

2) That we may grow spiritually (1 Peter 2:1-2; 2 Peter 3:18).

3) That we may be able to resist the darts and arrows of Satan (Ephesians 6:16; cf. Psalm 119:9-11; Matthew 4:1-11).

4) That we may have the power to evangelize and teach (Romans 1:16; cf. Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16; 2 Timothy 2:1-2).

5) That we may have safe passage through the pitfalls and temptations of life (Psalm 119:105; John 8:12; 1 John 1:5; cf. 2 Corinthians 4:1-6).

6) That we might guard ourselves from acquiring a very contagious disease — "sin" (Psalm 37:31; Psalm 119:11; cf. 1 John 3:1-4).

7) To eliminate worldly poison from our hearts (1 John 2:15-17; John 15:3; 1 Peter 1:22). God's word is our antibiotic, because His word is "pure" (Psalm 19:8). Thus, sin and the Word cannot dwell in the same heart. When one enters, the other must depart.

8) That we may bear spiritual fruit (John 15:1-5; cf. Psalm 1:1-3; Gal. 5:22-23). Without Bible study, our lives are barren (John 15:6; cf. Matthew 3:10; Matthew 7:19).

9) That we may grow into the image of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18; cf. Romans 8:29; Gal. 2:20).

10) That we may look forward to our future home in the beautiful environment of heaven (John 14:1-4; cf. 1 Peter 1:3-4; Revelation 21).

Dear reader, let us be willing to engage in an effective Bible study each day of our lives, so that we might glorify God (Matthew 5:14-16) and bring others to Christ (Romans 10:1-4; 1 Corinthians 9:22).
