At some time in our life, we will more than likely be affected by depression. Some common signs and symptoms of depression include feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, worthlessness, and helplessness.
As an example, the prophet Elijah exhibited a deep sense of despondency, discouragement, and sadness that is linked to personal powerlessness and loss of meaning and enthusiasm for life.
After defeating the prophets of Baal, he received a death threat from Jezebel (1 Kings 19:2-3). His hope was shattered, and despondency set in to the point that he wanted to die (1 Kings 19:4). However, God helped Elijah deal with his despondency in the following ways:
1) The Lord did not rebuke him for his despondency, but sent an angel to provide for his physical needs (1 Kings 19:5-8).
2) The Lord revealed Himself and reminded Elijah that He was quietly working among His people (1 Kings 19:11-14).
3) He renewed Elijah’s mission by giving him new orders (1 Kings 19:15-17).
4) God reminded Elijah that he wasn’t alone (1 Kings 19:18; cf. Romans 11:4).
Beloved, in times of dark discouragement, God will lead us out of depression by giving us a new spiritual vision, goals to achieve, and the power to achieve them (Luke 24:36-49; Acts 1:4-8).
