"You Can Teach An Old Dog New Tricks"

In the April-May-June, 2014, Volume 45, No. 2 online edition of the publication, "Think On These Things," is an above titled article, written by brother Doug Cyrus.

In his good and well-written article, brother Cyrus makes the following points and observations:

1) When we are young, we can deceive ourselves into thinking that we "know it all," when we really don't much of anything.

2) A mother's wise warning, "He who knows not and knows not that he knows not is a fool; shun him."

3) Having an humble attitude, allows us to learn what God wants us to know. Those folks who have a prideful attitude, can't learn much of anything new, because they think they "know it all." Paul tells us that "knowledge puffs up...." (1 Corinthians 8:1).

4) The gaining of knowledge many times "puffs us up" to the point where we no longer desire to see the truth of a matter, "but we just don't realize it."

5)  It is possible for us to fall into the category that the apostle Paul describes in 2 Timothy 3:7, "Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." One of the causes of this problem, is by our being selective in what we learn from what we "think" we already know.

6) For those folks who "think" they know it all, Solomon's warning is good advice, "Cease listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge" (Proverbs 19:27).

7) We can choose to view life through "glasses tinted with humility, or prideful superiority."

As brother Cyrus points out at the end of his article, with an occasional dose of humility, we "old dogs" can continue to "learn new tricks."

Indeed we can, brother Cyrus, indeed we can.
