Do We Know Our Product?

Professional salespeople will tell you that one mark of a good salesperson is a thorough knowledge of his product. He knows the materials from which it is made, understands its capabilities, studies the advantages it will bring to the consumer, and can answer his customers’ questions. The salesperson who doesn’t know his product will not get the sale.

Product buyers for large industrial companies here in the United States, report that more than 80 percent of salespeople who call on them, do not have a thorough knowledge of the items they are trying to sell.

This report made me think about those of us who are Christians. We are called to be spokesmen for Jesus, but how well do we know our “product” — the gospel? Rest assured — God knows His “product” (Psalm 33:4-15).

We represent Christ in everything we do and say (Colossians 3:17; cf. 1 Corinthians 10:31; 1 Peter 4:11). Therefore, when we speak out for Him, we must do so boldly and clearly (2 Corinthians 3:12; Ephesians 6:19). This means we must be familiar with what Scripture says about sin, salvation, and man’s need for a Savior. If we do not represent the gospel accurately, our influence for the Savior will be ineffective.

Dear reader, Let’s seriously study God’s Word (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV), learn its teachings (Luke 1:1-4; John 20:30-31), and put them into practice in our life (Hebrews 5:14; cf. Acts 18:24-28; 2 Timothy 2:1-2). Achieving these worthwhile goals will not only make us better influences in the world for the Lord (Matthew 5:16), but will help the growth of the Lord’s church (Acts 6:7; Acts 12:24; Acts 19:20).
