"Mary Had A Little Boy"

The below thought provoking poem was popular in church bulletins a few decades ago, but needs to be revived and its message heeded in the church today as we teach our children, grandchildren, and future generations about the saving gospel of Christ (Deuteronomy 6:1-15; Psalm 78:1-8).

"Mary had a little boy;
His soul was white as snow;
He never went to Bible Class
‘Cause Mary wouldn’t go.

He never knew of Jesus Christ
Like other boys his kind,
For while other children went to class,
That child was left behind.

Preacher ‘n teacher tried to help
When he was just a lad,
But Mary said, “Don’t talk to me
As if my child was bad.”

Yet as he grew from lad to youth,
It dawned on her one day,
That his soul which once was white
Had turned a dingy gray.

Soon realizing he was lost,
She tried to win him back,
But now the soul which once was white
Had turned an ugly black.

She even started back to church
And Bible study, too;
She begged the preacher, “Isn’t there
A thing that you can do?”

The preacher tried, and failed, and said,
“We‘re just too far behind;
I tried to tell you years ago,
But you would pay no mind.”

No luck, another soul was lost,
That once was white as snow;
Bible study would have helped,
But Mary wouldn’t go.—Author Unknown

Beloved, let’s fully support and be involved in our Bible classes (including those conducted in the home!).
