Our Only True Security

Today, I read that dozens of commissioned officers from Fort Bliss were out of a job as the Army downsizes its force. I can truly empathize with these officers, because I too was laid off in 1996 from a major gas pipeline company, only days away from retirement.

Being laid off suddenly catapults us back into reality, doesn‘t it? We think, “What do I do now?” Our best laid plans and hopes can be altered by events beyond our control. Once again, we are reminded that there is only one source of true security in our constantly changing world.

We can now consider Paul’s words with new appreciation:
Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life” (1 Timothy 6:17-19).
Dear reader, even though our resources may be  diminished through a job layoff, we can still grow rich by doing good works; being generous in our giving, and sharing with others.

By solely trusting in God, we are acknowledging the fact that He is our only true security in this life (Psalm 23), and that He will provide our every need (Genesis 22:8; Psalm 37:23-26; Matthew 6:33; Philippians 4:19).

My prayer to God for the above commissioned officers, is that they will totally trust in Him for their security, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
