"Cast Your Bread Upon The Waters"

An individual once asked me, “Can you please give us a scriptural interpretation of Ecclesiastes 11:1-6 and the application for us living in the 21st century?

Ecclesiastes 11:1  The phrase, "Cast your bread upon the waters" is a metaphor for performing good deeds. The principle being that if we help others with what God has provided for us, that kindness will be returned to us (note the biblical principle of giving in 2 Corinthians 8:9-15 NET).

Ecclesiastes 11:2  The use of the numbers "seven" (completeness) and "eight" (super abundance), gives us the idea of not putting any limitations on our willingness to help others. In other words, "Go the extra mile" (Matthew 5:41 - see article).

Ecclesiastes 11:3 — This verse provides us with the idea of the inevitability of certain events (Ecclesiastes 1:4-7), just as there is a certain inevitability about life in general (Ecclesiastes 1:8-11).

Ecclesiastes 11:4 — Gives us a metaphor of the overly cautious individual. He is always waiting for those "perfect" conditions which rarely come. Thus, he never sows nor reaps.

Ecclesiastes 11:5 — The idea in this verse is that sometimes, we have to act, even though we do not possess the full knowledge or understanding of everything, including the works of God (Job 38-39; cf. Romans 11:33). Thus, we have to proceed by "faith" (Hebrews 11:6,8-10).

Ecclesiastes 11:6 — The idea presented in this verse is that no matter what we do, there will always an unknown factor, i.e., whether or not it's better to sow in the morning or in the evening. The goal is to sow [plant] whenever the opportunity presents itself, and leave the outcome in God's hands (1 Corinthians 3:5-7).

Note: A commentary here and here also provides us with a scriptural interpretation and application of Ecclesiastes 11:1-6. Also see a pertinent article here.
