Is It Possible To Be Content?

An unknown poet once wrote this insightful observation: “As a rule, man’s a fool. When it’s hot, he wants it cool. And when it’s cool, he wants it hot. Always wanting what is not” (source).

In reading Philippians 4:11, we wonder if it is ever possible to be completely content.

Paul thought it was possible, for Philippians 4:12-13 NIV describes Paul’s response to life:

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.

Paul’s relationship with God superseded whatever he had or didn’t have (Luke 12:15). His contentment was not based on his circumstances, but on his abiding relationship with the Lord (John 15:7; 2 John 1:9).

Paul reminds us that contentment does not happen overnight. As our relationship with God develops over time and through experiences, we learn to trust in God more than ourselves (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Paul knew that Christ would give him the strength to persevere in whatever situation he encountered (Philippians 4:13), and He will do the same for us if we ask "in faith" (Romans 10:17) without doubting (James 1:5-6).
