On Getting The Lord's Work Done

As Jesus approached Jerusalem for the last time, He sent two disciples into the city to bring Him a donkey and told them, “If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ thus you shall say to him, ‘Because the Lord has need of it’” (Luke 19:28-31).

As we approach our waning years on earth, we may ask ourselves, “Can I still be useful to God? Is there some service I can render that will fill my days with significance? Am I needed in the Lord’s service?”

The answer, of course, is a resounding “Yes!” As Christians, the Lord needs each one of us just as He needed the donkey to carry Him through the streets of Jerusalem. He has always needed something or someone to get His work done. He still has useful work for us to do.

Like the donkey, our work may be one brief task, or it may be some activity that will fully occupy our years until our Master calls us home. It may be an opportunity to share the gospel with someone (cf. Acts 8:26-35; Acts 18:24-26), to teach a Bible class (Acts 17:16-17; Acts 18:1-4), or to extend some words of encouragement (Deuteronomy 3:28) — there will always be work for us to do for the Lord.

Through the faithful life of Caleb, the Bible illustrates the fact that there’s no retirement in the Lord’s army (cf. Joshua 14:6-15). Like Caleb, let’s get the Lord’s work done and then look forward to spending an eternity with Him (1 Corinthians 15:58; John 14:1-3).
