On Finishing The Race Of Our Life

Fox's Book Of Martyrs contains detailed accounts of Christian martyrs — those who were told to deny their faith but refused — thus suffering horrific deaths.

The Hebrew writer in Hebrews 11, tells of similar stories. After listing the familiar names of those who demonstrated great faith in God, the chapter closes, telling of the torture and death of faithful saints referred to simply as “others” (Hebrews 11:35-37).

While their names are not mentioned, Hebrews 11:38 pays them this tribute: “Of whom the world was not worthy” of them. They died boldly for their faith in Jesus.

Today, we hear of persecuted Christians around the world, yet many of us here in the United States, have not been tested to that extent. When we examine our own faith, do we ever wonder how we would respond to facing the prospect of martyrdom?

We hope and pray that we would have the same attitude as Paul, who although “chains and tribulations” awaited him (Acts 20:23), he looked forward to finishing the race of his life “with joy” (Acts 20:24; cf. 2 Timothy 4:7).

The question is, “Are we looking forward to finishing the race of our life “with joy?” We can, if we will but put our complete trust in the Lord and allow Him to guide our paths (Proverbs 3:5-6; cf. Psalm 23:3).
