This writer has heard just about every excuse there is for not opening and studying God’s Word, including my own. Perhaps our excuses might be dramatically diminished, if there were a hidden treasure located within the pages of the Bible. Would we not be motivated to search for such a treasure? (Matthew 13:44).
Well, there is indeed a treasure just waiting to be found — and it only takes 15 minutes a day to search for it. What is the treasure we‘re looking for? The wise man Solomon answers:
“If you seek for her [wisdom] as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God …. Then you will understand righteousness and justice, equity and every good path” (Proverbs 2:4-5,9).
Dear reader, the hidden treasure is “wisdom” — God’s wisdom — the kind of wisdom that causes spiritual growth and development (1 Peter 2:1-2; 2 Peter 3:18). Know that spiritual growth won’t happen overnight, but as we read, study, and make application of God’s Word to our lives every day (Ephesians 3:1-4; 2 Timothy 2:15; Hebrews 5:14), we will be changed into godly men and women — the kind of men and women God wants us to be. And with an added benefit to boot — spending quality time with our heavenly Father! (John 14:23; 2 John 1:9).
It all begins with a willing commitment (Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 9:16-19; Philippians 1:15-18), and continues with exciting discoveries that lead to the treasure of wisdom and life eternal (1 John 2:24-25; 1 John 5:13; 2 John 1:5-6).
“How precious is the Book divine,
By inspiration giv’n!
Bright as a lamp, its precepts shine,
To guide my soul to heav’n.
Holy Book divine! Precious treasure mine!
Lamp to my feet and a light to my way
To guide me safely home.” —L.O. Sanderson (see video)
