"Thou Art The Way"

There are great hymns illustrating great spiritual truths that we sing in every worship service to our heavenly Father. In this article we want to briefly look at the hymn “Thou Art The Way” and observe the lyrics with appropriate scripture.

“Thou Art The Way: To Thee Alone From Sin And Death We Flee” — Christ is “the way” to eternal life (John 14:6). There is no other “way” to eternal life (Matthew 1:21; John 10:1-2,7,9,10; Acts 4:12; Acts 10:43; 1 Timothy 2:5-6) .

“And He Who Would The Father Seek, Must Seek Him, Lord, By Thee” — No man comes to the Father but by Christ (John 10:9; John 14:6; Acts 4:12). The Old Testament prophets bore witness to the universality of the gospel, and that the condition of salvation was through obedience to Christ (Isaiah 53:11; Jeremiah 31:34; Daniel 9:24; Micah 7:18; Zechariah 13:1; Malachi 4:2).

“Thou Art The Truth: Thy Word Alone True Wisdom Can Impart” — Christ is “the truth” (the embodiment of truth) – (John 1:1; John 17:17). True “Wisdom” can only be imparted by God’s “Truth” (James 1:5; Proverbs 2:1-6).

“Thou Only Canst Instruct The Mind And Purify The Heart” — God “instructs” man – not vice-versa (Job 15:8; Job 21:22; Isaiah 40:13-14; Romans 11:33-35; 1 Corinthians 2:16). We “purify” our hearts when we “Draw nigh to God” (James 4:8). We “Draw nigh to God” when we are obedient to His “instructions” or Will (Deuteronomy 4:4-8,14; Matthew 7:21; Romans 2:13; James 1:22-25; 1 John 3:7).

“Thou Art The Life: The Rending Tomb Proclaims Thy Conquering Arm" — Spiritual life in only found in God's "Son" (1 John 4:9; 5:11); Our Lord overcame the tomb (Acts 2:24; Rom. 8:11; 1 Corinthians 6:14; 2 Corinthians 4:14; Ephesians 1:20; Colossians 2:12; 1 Thessalonians 1:10; Hebrews 13:20). Because Christ “conquered” death (Romans 8:34), we too will be “conquerors” over death (Romans 8:35-39; 1 Corinthians 15:54-57).

"And Those Who Put Their Trust In Thee Nor Death Nor Hell Shall Harm" — Notice the complete “trust” of Job in the Lord (Job 13:15). The Psalmist declared that the Lord will be with us as we “walk through the valley of the shadow of death” and thus we need not “fear” any evil (Psalm 23:4; cf. Isaiah 43:1-2); Those whose names are found written “in the book of life” (Revelation 20:15) or “the book of the living” (Psalm 69:28), will not be harmed by either death or hell because they will be “cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:14).
