Diligently Searching For God's Wisdom

The story is told of a woman who entered a hospital for tests. While she was being tested, her husband wrapped her very expensive 3.5-carat diamond ring in a napkin for safekeeping. In a forgetful moment, the woman’s husband threw the napkin in the trash. When he realized his mistake, he dashed outside, only to see the garbage truck going down the street.

He immediately called the local sanitation department and got permission to follow the truck to a transfer station. Workers at the transfer station began sorting through hundreds of garbage bags and recovered the expensive ring an hour later.

The writer of Proverbs urges us to diligently search for something far more precious than an expensive ring, and that is God’s wisdom. As His children, God encourages us to do whatever is necessary to get His insight and wisdom (Proverbs 2:3-5). Inner happiness comes when man attains this wisdom (Proverbs 3:13).

We are encouraged to diligently search for this rare jewel, because wisdom is not usually discovered by the casual observer. Wisdom is discovered and enjoyed only by those who are diligent, devoted, and determined to seek it — having the exact same attitude that Jesus taught regarding prayer (cf. Luke 11:5-9; Luke 18:1-8).

Let us devote our whole being to diligently searching for that precious jewel of God’s wisdom (John 5:39; Acts 17:11; 2 Timothy 2:15).
