Trusting In Cryogenics, Or In The Lord?

According to a Wall Street Journal article dated January 21, 2006, at least a dozen multimillionaires have left money to themselves in “personal revival trusts” with the hope of being brought back to life in the future by scientists who will try to resuscitate them. These immortality seekers have arranged to be cryogenically frozen after death.

Even if resuscitation were possible for these multimillionaires, seeking eternal life apart from the immortal God (1 Timothy 1:17), is to chase an elusive dream (cf. 1 John 5:11).

The inspired writer Paul affirmed that the Lord alone is the source of immortality (1 Timothy 6:13-16; cf. John 5:21; John 5:26; John 11:25) and is everlasting in His character and nature (cf. Psalm 90:1-2; Isaiah 40:28; Romans 16:25-26).

As human beings, we know that because of our sins, physical death is universal (Romans 5:12), inevitable, and will ultimately lead to judgment (Hebrews 9:27). Sin can only be countered by the redemption that is found through Jesus Christ our Lord (Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 9:12; 1 Peter 1:18-19). Through His resurrection, Jesus conquered the power of death and showed humanity the way to immortality (2 Timothy 1:8-10; cf. 1 Corinthians 15:51-57; Hebrews 2:14-15).

Thus our response to our own mortality should not be to preserve our physical bodies through cryogenics, but to be ready for our own death by being obedient to the saving gospel of Christ (cf. Acts 8:35-39), so that we might receive the promise of eternal life (1 John 2:24-25).

Dear reader, trusting in cryogenics for our immortality is not a sure thing, but trusting in and obeying the Lord for our immortality is a sure thing (Matthew 7:21; James 1:21-25; 1 Corinthians 15:50-53).
