A Lot Of Water Under The Bridge

By the grace and mercy of God, this writer is experiencing another birthday today (71 years young). Since my arrival on this celestial globe in 1944, I've seen a lot of water go under the bridge (history). I've seen several Presidents come and go, from Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1944 to our present President, Barack Obama.

Entertainment in the 1940's and 1950's was much different than it is today. I remember listening to my first radio program in 1947 with Fibber McGee and Molly, and watching the Howdy Doody Show with Buffalo Bob Smith and Clarabelle the Clown. As I recall, the show was kind of corny, but at least it was good clean fun for children, with no cursing or off-color humor. It was the era when spiritual and moral values were held in high esteem, promoted and taught.

Sad to say, during my short time on this planet, I've seen the Lord's church deteriorate from the high spiritual fervor it once experienced in the 1940's and 1950's, to the spiritual low we find it in today. Why the great change of fervor? Satan has kept us "busy" with too many worldly distractions, some in the form of ungodly entertainment, and it has slowly steeped into the Lord's church.

We also live in a more apathetic society today than the one I grew up in. Folks just seemingly don't care, not only about things spiritual, but for one another. Our Lord pretty well summed up His society (as well as ours) when He stated, "And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold" (Matthew 24:12).

Beloved, our time on earth is indeed short (Job 7:6-7; Psalm 78:39; James 4:14). We are all living on borrowed time. Thus, we cannot afford to be apathetic about the Lord's business. We need to set our priorities, remembering that "only what's done for Christ will last."
