If we learn anything through a study of the Bible, we learn that having the right attitude of heart is of primary importance in God’s eyes (Acts 13:22; cf. 1 Samuel 13:14). Also see Numbers 14:22-24; Joshua 14:6-14).
Once when Jesus told a story to illustrate how people receive and respond to His teaching (Matthew 13:1-9), His disciples asked, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” (Matthew 13:10). In reply, Jesus quoted the prophet Isaiah:
“For the heart of this people has grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing. And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them” (Matthew 13:15; cf. Isaiah 6:10).
How dangerously easy it is to neglect our hearts. If our hearts become callous, we will find no joy in living or serving the Lord, and apostasy is just a step away (Hebrews 3:6-12). But when our hearts are tender toward God (Psalm 51:17), understanding and gratefulness will flow from us to others (Psalm 51:1-13).
So, let’s ask ourselves, “What is the attitude of our heart in fully obeying the Lord?” (Numbers 14:24; cf. Matthew 7:21).
