An Interesting Possibility

Genesis 8:4 says that after the flood, Noah’s ark “rested in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat.” This is a whole range of mountains, but the highest is Mount Ararat, which today is capped with snow and ice. Many believe the ark is still there on this 16,945-foot mountain in Turkey — and it indeed may very well be.

The interesting thing is that because this mountain is just a few miles from the border with the former USSR, during the Cold War, our spy satellites took photographs of this area and many others. President Clinton declassified these photographs, and while months will be required to catalog them, those who have actively sought to find Noah’s ark, are anxious to see the ones of Mount Ararat.

In the newspaper article which told of this, a retired CIA agent who had seen the photos when they were first taken, said there is definitely something sticking out of the ice and snow. He said it could be an unusual rock formation, but certainly looked like the ribs of a wooden ship. Of course, whether or not any remains of the ark are found, it certainly existed at one time. However, physical evidence could be very valuable, not only to convince skeptics, but also to perhaps provide a date for the flood. This is turn could provide a date for the creation.

It will be interesting to see what the future may reveal. Yet if it proves to be nothing, “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). —Jim Mullican, via the Montana Street bulletin
