Who Teaches Our Children Today?

When Hannah dedicated Samuel to God, she meant business, because she didn’t just take him to the temple for dedication – she left him there, turning him over to Eli to bring him up in God’s service (1 Samuel 1:20-28).

Looking at Hannah’s commitment to God regarding Samuel, a question arises, “Who teaches our children today?

For a few moments of time, let’s probe this important question:

1) How many hours of instruction does the electronic mass media, in the form of television, Internet, texting on cell phones and playing video games, provide our children each day?

2) Is it the public school that gets their attention? Do we know what is going on in their classroom? Are there any worldly human philosophies that we need to combat?

3) Perhaps its their peers. Do we realize that as our children grow older, the stronger this influence becomes? Are we giving them a solid moral base so that wise decisions will become natural during their teenage years?

4) Is it the Lord through His word who teaches them? How much time and effort do we spend to make sure our children know that a relationship with the Lord is the basis for their security, peace of mind, and contentment?

Beloved, we need to dedicate our children in service to the Lord, just as Hannah did with Samuel, through our spiritual instruction and example (Ephesians 6:4; cf. 2 Timothy 1:1-5; 2 Timothy 3:15; Titus 2:1-8). So, if we are faithful Christians, who teaches our children today? The correct answer should be, God through His word (1 Samuel 3; cf. Colossians 1:21-28; Titus 2:9-12).
