Defining Moments

Quoting from clinical psychologist, Meg Jay, leadership guru, Paul Sohn, points out in this articlethe idea that the younger generation needs to intentionally set a foundation of defining moments that will affect them for the rest of their lives.

One defining moment for the younger generation, would be to recognize the sovereignty of GodAnother defining moment is recognized in a comment provided below the above article, where cken writes:

"Actually, and I say this from personal experience, your defining moments come when you are face to face with your imminent mortality. Only then, for most of us, does the why become more important than the how and the what. If you are lucky enough to survive, not only do you become more introspective, but you seriously re-evaluate God and your relationship with Him. Sadly you come to realize far too many "religious" people have a superficial understanding of, and a lip service relationship with God. Succinctly put, western civilization puts nearly all their effort and belief in the material world and almost totally ignores the spiritual world. This can be construed to characterize not only individuals but also organized religions."

Yes, sad to say that many so-called "religious" people have indeed a superficial understanding of, and a lip service relationship with God. Jesus realized this very fact when he quoted from Isaiah 29:13 in Matthew 15:7-8: "Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: 'These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.'"

As cken succinctly points out, "western civilization puts nearly all their effort and belief in the material world and almost totally ignores the spiritual world. This can be construed to characterize not only individuals but also organized religions."

Sadly, the above observation can also be seen in members of the Lord's church. What's the solution? Paul provides it in Colossians 3:1-4. "seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory."

Beloved, seeking those things which are above, and setting our minds on things above (the spiritual things - Matthew 6:33a), should be the most defining moment in our life.
