The Death Of The Handshake

In this National Review article, author Tyler Grant illustrates what the handshake is all about ..... allowing us to look at a fellow human being eye-to-eye while skin-to-skin. This writer vividly remembers a time when the handshake was the same as a contract in a business transaction. My late father made many of them in his television repair business over a period of forty-plus years (see here).

Now, according to the above article, Dr. Anthony Fauci has now pronounced the handshake gone. “I don’t think we should ever shake hands again,” he has said. Not only handshakes are seemingly gone, but hugging another human being may be gone as well (see here and here). Also see this American Thinker article.

While conversing with my Christian friend John this afternoon, he mentioned the fact that because of the coronavirus scare, most churches of Christ here in El Paso did not have church services at all today, "the first day of the week" (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2). Beloved, physically assembling "together" is a command! (Hebrews 10:24-25).

The Northside congregation where this writer attends, met this morning with eight faithful souls in attendance (yes, social distancing six feet apart), singing songs of praise, offering prayers of petition and request before Almighty God, partaking of the Lord's Supper, and engaging in the study and preaching of God's word. We were encouraged and strengthened in our faith by our attendance!

Beloved, if we cower down in the face of this coronavirus (or anything else) and self-imprison ourselves in our homes, what has happened to our faith? (Romans 10:17). Whatever happened to mountain-moving faith? (Matthew 21:19-21). Our Lord once asked the following question: "when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?" (Luke 18:1-8 - see article)

This writer believes we already know the answer. What a sad commentary on our ungodly society today. May God indeed help and forgive us all! Let us truly have Bible believing obedient faith (Romans 6:16-18) in what the Lord tells us in Genesis 28:15; Deuteronomy 31:6,8; Joshua 1:5; 1 Kings 8:56-58;  Hebrews 13:5).
