In our affluent and digital society, the word "selfie" is used quite often (see definition). The purpose behind taking a self-portrait with a digital camera, is obviously the promotion of "self" (something our selfish society knows a great deal about).
When Jesus emphasized the spiritual principle of denying "self" in Matthew 16:24, He took a 180 degree opposing selfless view (something our selfish society knows very little about). Discipleship demands self-denial. It means making God our number one priority above all worldly pursuits (Matthew 6:33), including our immediate family. Self-denial is human sacrifice of not only ourselves (Romans 12:1-2), but is designed to promote the Lord's work (1 Corinthians 15:58), which is part and parcel to helping needy people (see here, here, and here).
Is the Christian life an easy life? No, this aging writer can verify that it isn't (see here). There is a sacrificial price to be paid (see here), but the price is more than worth our place in that eternal dwelling place (see here and here).
Beloved, our "light affliction" (2 Corinthians 4:17) here on earth will be nothing in comparison to the eternal joys found in heaven (see here).
