There's no question in this writer's mind that smartphone addiction has become one of our society's major problems (there is a solution - see here). This NPR article emphasizes the well-known fact that almost any outside stimulus can generate a conditioned response (see Pavlov's Dogs article).
For example, this writer uses a dinging metal bell before Sunday morning Bible class, to alert the students to find a seat, cease talking, and make themselves mentally ready to engage in an opening prayer and ensuing Bible study (we are presently studying the Colossian letter - short summary).
This little bell (outside stimulus) thus generates a conditioned response, not unlike the conditioning of Pavlov's dogs.
As a positive (and practical) suggestion to the above negative smartphone addiction article, perhaps smartphone users could set a daily alert on their smartphone devices (outside stimulus), alerting them that it was time to cease all worldly thinking and activities (including smartphone use - shut down that display!), and totally devote themselves to a set, predetermined, and uninterrupted Bible study period (see here, here, and here).
Beloved, we need to realize that there's no "fast food" in Bible study!
We must be willing and eager to engage in a "daily" study of God's word in order to be pleasing to Him (Psalm 1:1-2; 2 Timothy 2:15; cf. Acts 17:11 KJV).
